Will reflexology hurt?

There may be moments of fleeting sensitivity but many people describe this as a nice feeling and the therapist is often aware of this imbalance and may adjust pressure accordingly. The pressure that is applied is however, predetermined to suit the individual client, so that the client doesn't suffer unnecessarily.

Are there certain contra-indications?

My methods are not intended to replace allopathic medicine, should you have concerns about your health you should first always visit your Doctor.

Deep Vein Thrombosis is contra indicated in reflexology and should not be treated.

For cancer patients; Reflexology and reiki are available in many treatment centres and hospices and many people find these therapies helpful, however please note that your Doctor and those involved with your treatment plan may wish to be informed that you are choosing to receive reflexology.

Is reflexology safe to treat a client who is under 3 months pregnant?'

There are a number of issues that need to be examined when answering this. Whilst there are risks throughout pregnancy, at under 3 months/13 weeks pregnancy, there is a higher likelihood of miscarriage. Therefore if a therapist were to treat someone during this period there is statistically a greater chance that they will miscarry than if they were treated later on in the pregnancy. There is no evidence to show that reflexology can bring on a miscarriage. Indeed some Reflexologists claim that reflexology can be used effectively in situations where there has been a history of miscarriage, though once again there is no research evidence to back this up. However, as this is a very difficult area, I have decided that I will not treat clients who are under 3 months pregnant.

How can reflexology help me?

Reflexology can be used to help restore and maintain the bodies natural balance. It does not focus on specific symptoms but on the restorative effects of improving the overall equilibrium within the client - a delicate and complex synthesis of physical, emotional and spiritual aspects. Reflexology can act as a catalyst, making the simplest intervention possible; to allow the body to take over and to do what is necessary to return to homeostasis, its unique energetic make-up.

How will I feel?

Most people are surprised that the treatment does not feel ticklish and that they can immediately relax. Clients may respond very differently to the treatment, some may respond in a very definate way. Any change or improvement, good or bad, large or small should be noted. This is vital information to feed back to the Reflexologist as it shows how your body is responding to treatment. This will help the Reflexologist to tailor a treatment plan specific to your needs.

How long will a course of treatments take?

Many clients will take a treatment of reflexology for different reasons. It's fine to take a treatment just for pleasure, reflexology is great for 'time out,' that very special hour for yourself, this can be very valuable in a busy lifestyle. Sometimes, initially, a course of treatments is indicated, your Reflexologist will discuss this with you. Each client will respond to the treatment in their own peculiar way, generally it is possible to establish at an early stage if the treatment is going to be beneficial to that client. Review dates may be established to check progress and any progress is continually assessed and reviewed.

Can reflexology help grief and other emotional problems?

In one sense it can't of course, only the client themselves can do that. It may offer however relaxation, comfort and support in the midst of all the turmoil. As part of an integrated care plan, it may help the client to meet the process and express what is needed.
